HALDIA: Marking the 77th Republic Day with patriotic fervor, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Haldia Refinery organized a grand ceremonial event at the IOC Stadium in Haldia Township on Monday. The event was headlined by Atanu Sanyal, Executive Director and Refinery Head, who unfurled the national tricolor and delivered a forward-looking address focusing on technological evolution and national security.

The celebrations featured a crisp march-past by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, followed by a vibrant parade involving students from various local schools.

In his keynote address, Sanyal emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as the most significant and attractive force in the modern world. Warning of a future where "machines may possess more knowledge than humans," he stressed that India must rapidly bolster its military strength. "The need for enhanced military capability will be paramount in the coming years to ensure our nation's security in an increasingly complex global landscape," Sanyal noted.

Turning his focus to the energy sector, Sanyal highlighted that human resource optimization is the only way for the Haldia Refinery to remain competitive. He issued a clear mandate for the facility to scale its operations.

"Survival in the future will be difficult if we do not utilize our manpower to its full potential. Running at a capacity of 8 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) will no longer suffice; we must push to reach the 10 MMTPA mark," he said, adding that the refinery must operate at its "fullest strength" to avoid being sidelined.

The outgoing ED also touched upon environmental and social pillars, identifying water conservation as a "critical necessity" for the industry. He further lauded the role of women in the workforce, stating that "Mahila Empowerment" is a driving force for the growth of IOC.

The event also marked a significant transition for the refinery. Atanu Sanyal is set to complete his tenure on January 31, 2026. He officially announced that Sushanta Kumar Das will take over as the new Executive Director and Refinery Head following his retirement.

Extending his best wishes to his successor, Sanyal expressed confidence that the refinery would reach new heights of prosperity and excellence under the new leadership.
